DASH — Dinwoodie Assessment and Simulation Hub

DASH is room 001 — the first medical BLIS suite Gener8 ever built.

Wansbeck General Hospital, Ashington

The Dinwoodie Assessment and Simulation Hub is Northumbria Healthcare's simulation centre, an accredited facility at Wansbeck General Hospital that trains doctors, nurses and allied health professionals from across the trust. When it came to adding an immersive suite there was no track record to buy from — only a specification, and a supplier prepared to build to it.

Beyond video on a wall

Most immersive rooms play video or show static images and ask the learner to fill in the rest. That ceiling is low, and educators hit it quickly.

“Instead of just showing a basic video or static images to try and create a space, you can create anything you want, and have any learning experience you want with it. People will remember this experience. They'll leave the room and retain everything, because it's so interesting and so interactive.”

Every department, one room

The suite was specified for clinical simulation. What it became was a resource the whole trust books.

“The possibilities are endless. I could tailor individual learning, or whole scenarios, for every department. There's nothing that can't be created — nobody gets left out. Everybody could use this system.”

That depends entirely on the software being usable by the person who teaches, not only by the person who installed it. On the touch control: “It's absolutely superb. Very intuitive. You can tailor it to do whatever you like. It just makes sense — it's how it should be.”

John Stratford

I've never seen anything out there that's this polished. It's gone further than my expectations, and I think I'm going to get much more out of it than I anticipated. The only limit is what I can come up with.
