Oxford Brookes did not buy an immersive room for one course. They bought it for the whole faculty.

The suite sits in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, where nurses, midwives, social workers, physiotherapists and occupational therapists all train. The question the team set themselves — Claire Mohrmann, Head of Professional Practice Skills; Lorraine Watley, Senior Lecturer in Simulation and Immersive Learning Technology; and Russell Sinclair, Simulation Technologist — was not whether it would work for one of those programmes, but how to embed it across all of them.
One room, every profession
A single space has to become a ward, a home visit, a community setting or a clinic, depending on who walks in that morning. That is a content problem more than a hardware one, and it is where the editing matters: material built once gets used again, and adapting it for a different cohort or a different profession is a small change rather than a new commission.
“Once I've created the material I'll be able to use it over and over — and if I need to make edits, it should be very easy to make small changes to accommodate different cohorts, different professions.”
“We're now looking at how we embed this kind of experiential learning, using the immersive rooms, into all of those different programmes.”
An exciting place to learn
What the team keep returning to is not the technology. It is what happens to a lecture theatre when the walls stop being walls.
“This brings the lecture theatre to life, which makes it a really exciting place to learn in. I think that's one of the really key things.”
And on the part that never appears in a specification: “The support has been fantastic. Whenever we've needed Gener8, they've actually been here.”
